Choosing the Right E-Liquid Strength

The decision to turn from tar-filled traditional cigarettes to flavoured electronic cigarettes is a brilliant one. It probably is one of the best decisions you’ve made in a very long time. This choice however comes with the burden of settling on the best liquid with e-juice nicotine levels that best suit your smoking tastes. And while novice smokers find making this choice bewildering, it need not be so. You can easily figure out your preference by simply experimenting to find out what works best.

Conventionally, e-juice strength is determined with the amount of nicotine. This is expressed as mg/ml to mean the amount of nicotine in milligrams available per millilitre of the juice. This ratio can be represented either as a percent or solution. In such a situation, you will see values presented as 1.2% or 2.4% instead of 12mg/ml and 24mg/ml and so forth. Usually, these values mean the same thing only they have been interpreted differently.

Aside from deciding on the best nicotine strength, smokers making the switch do from time to time have problems determining the nicotine level in the e-liquid that comes close to emulating the strength of a particular cigarette one is shifting from. This concern can be addressed by knowing or understanding the exact amount of nicotine contained in your preferred e-liquid. A 30ml bottle of 12mg nicotine e-liquid has 360mg of nicotine. From this rudimentary math, you can calculate the approximate amount of nicotine available in your cartridge whenever you refill. Based on the knowledge that there are approximately 20 e-liquid drops for every millimetre, 12mg of nicotine would thus give you 0.6mg per drop; that is, 12mg for every 20 drops. If for instance you refill your cartridge with six drops then that would be equivalent to 3.6mg of nicotine. What this means is that you will have consumed 3.6mg of nicotine from the moment you refill your cartridge until your next top up.

This however is just an approximate amount as the exact amount of nicotine the body absorbs depends on many factors. Nicotine density in the e-liquid, smoking timing and frequency, as well as the e-liquid quantity your electronic cigarette vaporizes all determine the amount of nicotine you ingest. Despite all these factors, the total amount of nicotine vaporized by the atomizer won’t be absorbed by the body in its entirety. If for instance you inhale a drop containing 12mg of nicotine, you will not take in that whole amount of nicotine. At best, the body will take in between 40% and 65% and even this depends on one’s personal smoking habits.
